I`ve been in college for two years, and I`ve learned alot about playing my horn, ive also been playing with an awful other player, how do you tell a t-bone player how to "not suck"

encouragement. Spend TONS of time with them warming up and slip in a "you could do this better." etc. be nice as possible, the moment you become negative holding the horn becomes a negative experience for both people. become a mentor and not a peer.

as a underclassman, i used to get angry when someone told me not to slur that, or dont play up an octave, what have you.... Realized, they had more experience, and took in what they told me, and not let it get to my head. Positive reinforcement is always a good thing, but they some people need a swift kick in the ass. Just be like hey, thats not up to par, if you need help, i would be glad to go over it with you.

Thanks for the info, but what do you do when they are the most annoying on top of that. I did try and be her mentor (excellent idea) but she needs a swift kick, really. how do you make one feel they should practice?

Thanks for the advice so far, its great.
Does anyone here play in a brass choir?

Then, give her a swift kick, if she is playing in college, then that person should be serious about her music. Hell, Im a high school senior, i might not practice every day, but i make sure i get in enough time to make what im playing sound great, wheter it be for practice, my own benefit, or a concert.... I am also kind of surprized that the director hasnt pulled her aside yet, if it is as bad as it sounds.... If you can, make time for a sectional, and have just the bones go through the music, works for my section, whenever we have some difficulties, wheter it be one person, or all...

I also play in a brass choir, have for 3 years...

sectionals are a really good place to call people out on their crap. So get into one and show to her that she is not able to play her part.

and i play in a brass choir trombone choir and trombone quartet....

Yeah, you gotta do something. What you do is hard to tell because each situation is different, but the sectional sounds like a good idea. Is the rest of the section on your side? If so, then the sectional would be perfect. You just have to go in there and look like the good guy, the one looking out for the rest of the section and the rest of the band. Something like, "Hey, this just isn`t cutting it. Your not doing your job, and I`m sick of it." Or, "Hey, it`s time you started practicing, your not up to par with us or the rest of the group. We are putting in all the work and you are holding us down."

This is tough, I`ve gone through it a couple of times. Once as section leader with my third player, and once with a grad student that thought he was God. The first, I just blew up at during a sectional, because I let it go on for so long, and the second tried to lecture us on tour before getting back on the bus, and I went off on him. Both times, furtunately, I had the rest of the section behind me, and after both a shouting match and a logics argument, I won. That would deffinately play well in your favor.

The other option is going right over everyones head. Talk to the director of the group and express your problem, they are more than likely to help you out a ton. Also, are you both music majors? And on top of that, taking lessons? Even better, taking lessons from the same person? That would be the next place I would go. Tell your applied instructor about this problem, maybe they can step in and help out.

And yes, I have played with a trombone choir, a brass ensemble, and I am still playing with my brass quintet. I am also currently putting together all 3 at the school I work at. Why?

I play in a band wid other t-bones that arent too great. I usually point out on how to position their lips, how high or low to play, key signatures, notes, accents, crescendos, ect....
Usually u dun need to point out that they suk cuz if they do they SHOULD already know it.
But there are ppl who need to be criticized inorder to play correctly

Record their playing...and like a half a month later, tell them that you made a recording of someone one...if they comment that the player is bad...tell them the truth, that it is them that are bad...-_- mean, but effective.

i have the same problem.except the other 3 guys i play with are idiots.none of them can play worth a damn!two of them give me a hard time about the fact that i actually take the 10 secs. it takes to put my horn away in its case.they throw their`s in the cubby holes(not in a case or anything). It really drives me crazy! When i get awards for band or whatever, they mock me and sarcasticly say"i bet you`re gonna hang that up on your wall at home right above your bed and look at it every night".They`re real bastards about it.i dont know if they`re jealous or what, but its getting on my nerves!im not really anything special, but i do try,and i think that`s what they dont like(the fact that im not a lazy ass like them).they dont give a rat`s ass about anything.im sick of getting ridiculed about something as stupid as that.they walk by me and literally throw their horns in their cases and while im putting mine away, they talk out loud to each other and walk right beside me and say"this is such a great idea we had,but Tyrea`s too cool to do it.Why do you take the time to do it,it`s pointless!?!"
