Hello everyone,
I just received my violin today, and im a newbie. I know that when holding the violin, my shoulders should be at rest and my chin not too much to the left. But the thing is, when my try to place the violin on my shoulder and chin, it slides foward, which means the scroll comes towards me. I have a long neck, and a boney? shoulder. I dont have a shoulder rest right now, so i tried using a towel, not much help...
any help would be appreciated. thank you.

Shoulder rest! Shoulder rest! Shoulder rest! I think that your problem will be solved upon purchasing a shoulder rest. I also often play without one, but that makes it difficult to shift positions, because I am holding the violin up with my left hand. It is also an extreme strain on my neck because I have to dip my head so much. Get a Kun or something. For the first few years that I played I actually used a special sponge held on with a rubber band as a shoulder rest. Improvise, just make it so that it is only the weight of your head and shoulder holding the violin parallel to the floor.
So that is what I think the problem is. Hope I helped...

If you have a bony shoulder than something like a "Wee Bad" would probably be more comfortable.
