One site that may help you a lot is www.violinonline.com. I went there, and I learned a lot. It tells you about holding the violin, the bow, how to tune it, and a lot more. I hope this helps you some!

I`m not a violinist but i think i can help you. On the subject of the strings, are you sure they aren`t already tuned, get yourself a tuner to check, they are not very expensive!! Have you tried holding the violin between your knees at the waist (the bit where it curves in) and the holding onto the bridge while you tighten the string. I find that you should work from the outside in, so tighten the e string, then the g string, the a string and then the d string. Also try tightening them all a little bit and then a little more untill they are all in tune. This means that the pressure on the bridge remains equal and by tightening them a little bit at a time you are stabilising it.
With the rosin, you need to rub it along the full length of the hairs on the bow a few times, when you touch it there should be a whitish power left on you fingers. The rosin just helps the bow to glide and make a nicer sound. If the rosin is not going onto the bow very well then get a coin (if you`re english then a 20p coin is good, otherwise anything with angles) and scrape it in one direction across the rosin.
I hope i have helped, good luck with the learning.
