You can use old perfume for the strings. but for the wood there;s not really another another option other than buying some I`m afraid.

I suppose the way you clean wood furniture like a table is the same way you would clean a violin, like with Pledge, but I would just suggest wiping the violin off along with the strings with a cotton cloth.

excellent thing for wood is walnut. Take a piece of cloth and put some walnuts in it, close it and smash them real good untill the cloth is soked with nut-oil. Then polish your violin. It looks perfect, its clean, it smells mmmm and it sounds much better!

Um, this is off topic, but how often do you guys recommend changing strings?
Cuz I don`t really clean mine that often, cuz I didn`t really know what to clean them with, and they start sounding bad after awhile.

Different strings vary in lifespan.
When you clean your strings, make sure you put something (like a piece of paper) between the strings and the fingerboard so you don`t mess up the varnish.

Never use any chemical or mixture that contains alcohol on a good violin! Old perfume to clean the strings for instance, contains alcohol. It may clean the strings but get a drop on old violin varnish or worst yet a french polished instrument and you just ruined the finish! This may not matter on a new poly or laquer finish.
Xylene can be used to clean old rosin buildup off violins but should be tried under tailpiece first to make sure it will not mar varnish.
A pencil eraser is just about perfect to clean strings. Get some fiddle brite or violin cleaner from a luthier supply to clean your instrument. Do not use such things as pledge
