My new violin has no fine tuners. Do i need them anyways? Would it be ok to tune without them?

It is fine if you tune without them, it is just a little more difficult to find the exact note, but it is possible. Fine tuners don`t cost too much, so you can get some put on for only a small price, but they aren`t absoloutely necessary. They are just nice to have.

I`d recommend them on strings E and A... They make themselves useful there and it`s worth having them.

You really need them more for steel strings. If your strings are stretchy--gut, perlon etc, then you don`t need them. This is because for a given change in pitch , you turn the peg farther with a stretchy string than with a stiff one. Steel is stiff (I am not talking about bending stiffness--I am speaking to the stretch in tension) whereas gut/synthetic are stretchy.

Putting fine tuners on your tailpiece will have an effect on the sound of your instrument, because it changes the weight and resonance of the tailpiece. Not necessarily bad--but a change.

The other reason for fine tuners is that the pegs are difficult to use, or the player has not learned how to use them effectively---these two issues are interdependent, as badly fit pegs make for difficulty in figuring out how to use them!

I would suggest getting fine tuners for your instrument, trust me it will help. You don`t necesarily NEED them but having them will be VERY helpful.

If you`re a beginning player, than you should have all four fine tuners. If you`re a more advanced player, meaning you know how to tune exactly BY YOURSELF, have mastered pretty much everything, and you definitely know you`re going to stick with the violin for years and years, than having no fine tuners is ok.

If you want to be a professional violinist, than look forward to having just ONE fine tuner. And that`s for your E string. =]

Having fine tuners affect the quality of sound you get. I advise you to just have one on the E string, or the E and A strings. Most professional instruments dont have them because sound overall is more important.
