"intermediate" is a pretty broad term, so it`s hard to know exactly what to say. also, i don`t know how much you currently practice. but i would say that if you start at an hour and then gradually work it up over a few weeks, you could reach 2 or 3 hours, which is plenty unless you want to be a professional musician. try to make at least a third of your practice basics like scales, arpeggios, thirds, sixths, octaves, etc. good luck

Do you ever get a sore neck from practicing?

Yep; usually by the time my neck is getting sore, my tone
is going to crap from being tired. So I stop practicing for a while then anyway.

How long do you usually practice before your neck gets sore?
For me it`s about an hour; sometimes two.

Maybe I should try a shoulder pad; I have a medium long neck,
and I do end up bending it quite far.

Ouch,
Jonny

practise 30-45 minutes if you are beginning... cause... i found that i practised maybe 2 hours when iwas in my first year... and i burnt (wrong) techniques in to my head... and it took my teacher a long time to reteach stuff properly... once you get the techiniques you need to learn... and yo ucan do them well... you can prob get the violin out more... but remember to take breaks

I have a bad habit of not holding my violin up high enough.
My teacher is really bugging me with this.

When I first started a would practice until my fingers hurt like heck from the strings cutting into them, but somewhere along the way my fingers got tough and still feel fine no matter how long I practice . Now I practice until whatever I`m playing is very good. Then I leave and come back later and practice some more. There Is always room for improvement. I usualy practice 2-3 hours a day.

In europe, where I studied for a while, 3 hours was the minimum that teachers let their students practice.

Never overdo parcticing.
Only as much as you need to.

my teacher`s told me that young people can`t consentrate for more than 45 minutes at a time. I practise 6 times 45 min. a day with 10 min. breaks and one longer break. I also take one day a week off and then it`s all quality practise.
Also, I`ve found it really effective to plan for how long every exersize or piece is to be practised, that way forcing my self to go deep into details I might otherwise oversee.
