Hi!

It`s not the hardest instrument, but it`s not too easy either.

I think the general wisdom of this forum is:
1> Definitely give it a try!
2> Get a teacher.
3> PRACTICE!!!
4> If you enjoy it, keep doing it.

How long have you been playing flute?

Much love,
Jonny

Violin is one of the hardest instruments.
you need to spend a lot of time being with it to be a good player.

But it is one of the most expresive and beautiful of instruments.
And very rewarding.

I think that it matters on the person really. For me the violin was easy to learn because I had a good teacher, I caught on quickly. Considering you play the flute already you have an advantage. Right now I`d concentrate on your posture and bow hold.

Enjoy the violin if you decide to play it It`s a great instrument

to play the ciolin, all you need is time to practice and a good ear. (Since pushing down a button won`t give the right note all the time) I also recently started and am flying through lessons as I have a few years of saxophone and piano experience behind me. It is really fun though, I wouldn`t hesistate to start if I were you.

Well, considering you play the flute already, than violin shouldn`t make much of a difference.

The level of difficulty when starting the violin is really based on your music background, talent, and foundation. If you know your notes well, can tune your own instrument REALLY well, etc., than violin shouldn`t be a problem to you.

From what I had seen on fingering charts for flutes, you have to press certain keys to get a certain note. But those keys aren`t exactly in consecutive order.
For violin, it`s kind of like the piano, with consecutive and recognizable pattern of the fingering. Believe me, the string family seems much more easier than brass or woodwind.

But of course, since I started out with piano as my main instrument, violin`s a breeze for me. Depending on how well you learn and adapt to different instruments, it can be an easy instrument.

Though you have to have a very fine ear to tune a violin. Four strings, man! And since you already have some music experience, you most likely would not have any trouble with the notes. All you need to learn is how to tune the violin, use the bow (and hold it), and all the other crap.
Like the flute and all the other woodwind/brass instruments, they all have embrouchure. For strings, your "embrouchure" is your bow. O__o

But anyways, good luck with the violin!

I played the flute for almost a year it was pretty easy. Unlike flute with the violin you have to be able to find the note and tune it properley where as with the flute and things like the piano (I play/played all 3) all you have to do is plunk a key to get the right note. Think about it like this. How long does it take people to sound okay on a violin or a flute and to be able to play a song of the same complexity and be in tune? It is much much harder to do that on the vioin then on the flute.

Don`t worry; I sounded terrible when I first tried my friends` violins, but now that I have my own and practice a few hours a day, I`m not so bad. (Tone-wise anyway.)

Wow, I can`t believe it`s been three and a half months already.

Much love,
+Jonny

You asked about ebay violins. Be very careful. Yes... there are some good ones... but there are some extremely cheap and very poorly setup instruments. Best to be able to hold it... play it... and better to have an experienced player check it out before purchasing. Buy the best that you can afford! You`ll have MUCH more fun...and learn much more quickly with an instrument that is set up well!

All instruments are hard in different ways. Violin is hard, but then again you don`t have to worry about how hard you`re blowing like with the flute, and you don`t have to worry about getting a splinter in your tounge. That happened to me once on a clariner . If you do start violin you will need lots of practice, but you should get the hang of it.
