I don`t know if the is what you mean or not, but...
In third pos on the G string your first finger should hit C
on D you should hit G
on A you should hit D
and on E you hit A

thank you so much! I am a guitar player, and I am teaching myself until i can afford lessons. I am actually finding it quite easy, and am making progress everyday. But i have been confused about "third position" , because on guitar that is called fifth position. Thanks for clearing that up!

Regarding guitar: yes, frets on guitar are chromatic half steps, whereas "positions" on violin are diatonic intervals (some half steps, some whole steps).

Original poster: Notice that the 1st finger in 3rd position turns the violin into a viola up one octave: CGDA. However, because your 1st finger is now making the "equivalent" of the open string, compared to 1st position you will be using the "next finger" to play any particular note. In otherwords to play B, you will use the 2nd finger instead of the 1st, etc.
