Possible? Can I modify my violin?

I have seen it done before, but personally I wouldn`t try it...

I`m guessing that the vibrations of an open string may contact with the metal dividers of the frets (not really sure though). If you play a violin without frets you gain more skill because you can `feel` the notes without having a `space` to guide you, and glissandi (gissando`s?!) won`t sound as good on a fretted instrument.

That`s my opinion anyway. It would be interesting to hear from another member to see thier ideas and opinions

I`m not an expert or anything, but I would agree with the first reply. The frets might get in the way, and glissandi would definetly not sound as good.

You won`t be able to shift position well with frets. Violin is meant to be an unfretted instrument, and you need to learn to use your ears to play the right notes.

I carved frets in with a compass and a ruler -- and the help of a piano worked well - but be carefull there not like exactly the same space apart?
To those who say you need to learn the hard way to gain skill - SNOBS!!! - skill will come anyway - like facial hair!LOL!!!

sanzankoan is a clown. If you want a fretted-violin-like instrument, you should take up the viol.

sanzenkoan, you`re right. You`re not a clown. You are just a plain retard. The violin isn`t meant to be a fretted instrument whatsoever, and it can`t possibly sound nearly as well or in tune with frets. Why would you ruin such a good instrument by carving in frets? Here`s a tip. Instead of always trying to take a short cut and doing a half-ass job, why don`t you try actually working once in a while? Oh wait, that`s right, you probably have no real talent.

I think that`s more along the lines of `grooves` than frets. Why didn`t you just use tape like everyone else?

As for actual frets, that`s a bad idea - would get in the way of shifting for one thing, plus you wouldn`t be able to pretend you`re Istak Perlman playing the Hero soundtrack. Don`t mutilate your violin - put some tape down where your fingers need to be, and when you go to that position naturally, take the tape off. Or move it up to the next position.

frets! groves! all you want is some basic idea of where the notes are - this can take the longest time to leartn - i didnt mean sticking strips of mettle on to it!lmao and i doubt thats what he ment anyway - and in my experience no one keeps the instrement they learnt to play on anyway - the almost always buy a better lookin or sounding new one i would say putting scoring groves in to get an idea of where the notes are is a good idea! unless you wanna just spend weeks wondering if you are hitting the right notes?? which in my opininon is taking the long way around! i wouldnt score them in so you can see the wood underneith tho - just so you can see a faint almost visable line! and c and c sharp are very close together so watch out!

Aren`t you all missing something....the guitar is an even-tempered instrument, like the piano. But the violin is not. Frets do not apply, and the only way to insure proper intonation is to use your ear. If you rely on frets, a note could be out of tune up to a quarter tone, which is a big deal. The whole point of playing is to play in tune, so you can`t rely on frets. Your ear is your greatest tool...use it.

yeah but for a beginer it would still offer some guidance to where the notes are - even if there just before or after the scored line/fret especially if the guy cant play another instrement - it doesnt take long before you can feel where the notes are anyway?? instead of there feeling like theres a million places you could put your finger on the string to hit the note it`ll feel like theres only one and only one possible place - and you`ll do it with out even thinking about it! just takes practise!

What`s the point of feeling notes that are out of tune? Use your ear, and then you will always be in tune, and you can always trust yourself. If you rely on tape, what do you do when the tape is removed? Use your ear, use it now. Frets are not for the violin. There`s no point to playing if you are out of tune. If you are incapable of learning without frets, then stick to the guitar.

if you are over the age of 15 and still behaving like a spoilt child then i really feel sorry for you! maybe you should think about what kind of person you are - and work out what kind of person you would like to be!!!
