I have been lucky enough today to get a new violin which I believe is antique (well, it looks old, has a few bumps, faded a bit in places) however unlike my previous violins it has no marking inside...no label or nothing. The shopkeeper thought it had Romanian origin (not sure how he figured that out!).

On closer inspection, on the back of the violin nearest to the shoulder on the right `bout,` there is a small engraving which has three letters...either "AJP" or "AFP"...it might even be upside down and read "d£D" but I doubt it!

Has anyone got any ideas from this brief description of what it could be?

Thanks

Put up a picture - that might give a few more clues.

it`d be cool to see a picture ya. i`m the same i have my violin which we cant see the make of either, but it is useful to take it to a valuer who will be able to give you a fair good idea about how much it`s worth etc

If he`s only just bought it and it`s new, it`s worth what he was prepared to pay for it.
