how long can you play on a set of stringfs before they`re old and you have to replace them?

Untill they snap or begin to wear away

Until they sound bad, or don`t sound true--when the finger positions aren`t consistent anymore from string to string.

You can play them until they snap, but they`ll stop sounding good long before that. Try this - pluck the string with your finger and listen to the tone. If the tone resolves UP to the note, it`s good. If the tone remains constant or resolves down, it`s a `dead` string and needs to be replaced.
