Any violin that is NOT machine made is good. Used violins are good also. The older an instrument is, the better it sounds.

I disagree with Sean. Although it is true that any violin when aged is better than it was when new, the fact that it is old alone does not make it good. Has anyone here ever come across an old Chinese violin that sounds good? I`ve come across plenty of old German and Czech ones that sound worse than good new violins. Of course everything is complicated by the fact that a good set up and different strings can make all the difference in the world ....
We sell violins but since I`m in the UK, I`m not likely to make a sale to you so i guess i can claim to be relatively unbiased here: we have sold used ones and new ones, none have equalled let alone surpassed a Gliga Gama for tone. And I am including some professionally set up late nineteenth century instruments in that comparison, including one master made signed one (Hermann Dolling Jr.)
But of course tone is a terribly personal thing.
I do have a viola that I prefer to a Gliga Gama but it is a German master made one, signed (Reinhold Schnabl) and dating from 1978 so well played in. It cost me £1200 back in 1984, is professionally set up, and at today`s prices would go for £2000 - £4000 depending on cosmetic condition. New, well, I guess £6000 plus ... 10 to 15 times the price of a Gama. I rest my case .....

This is for Kaleidoscope. There is a strativarius violin on ebay now
( 9-9-03)and it will be on until
(9-13-03). They claim it to be from the 1800`s.
Sean, you seem to know more than I do, so can you tell me where to go for an appraisal of my father`s violin?
Thanks
