Hey everyone! I am 13 years old and am trying to teach myself the violin, but I do not know what to start with. What type of music (besides rock and hip hop please) do ya think I should start with? I like all music and I am like to play fast songs so it is kinda hard for me to find some thing easy enough and yet fast and hard (hope you understand what I was saying ). If you know of some music I could play or like please let me know!

Have a great day!!
Natalya

Try getting the first couple of Suzuki books. They start pretty easy, but have recognizable songs and you feel like you're playing real music faster.

You should probably take a few lessons as well, even if you don't want to take full-time lessons, just to make sure you're holding everything correct and not picking up bad habits that could keep you from playing with an ensamble later.

I agree with the above post in that you should find yourself a teacher. It is difficult to teach yourself such a difficult instrument as the violin.

As for fast, fun, easy/hard songs - yes, Suzuki books are the best to start with, but I would supplement them with some Irish jigs or Celtic fiddle music so that you have something that you enjoy if you want to go for the fast stuff. There are books out there - go to your local music store and ask around for them. Most of these are very easy to learn and fun to play.

Try scales on the violin, so that you get used to the fingering and switching strings and such...it's fun, do that before you start playing actual songs. And for a style of music, I would say start with Classical, since violin is a big classical instrument, or go to the riffs page on this site...find a few easy songs, and practice them!!

Love,

I'm kind of new too, I stopped playing a few years back, and I recently started playing again, I kind of find it hard getting from string A to string G and also I don't quite know the strings with a ledger line...

Any body have a good piece for a guy like me? thanks

Natalya, try playing Bach. not allways fast but you can allways add your own touches. im 13 also and have been playing for 4 years. also Russian songs are fast and VERY melodic. good luck. the private lessons will REALLY help!
