What are the top brands for violins?
If you could tell me, that would be great!

<Added>

Oh... STUDENT violins. I'm not looking for anything special, just something good quality to get me started.

Well it rather depends on your budget. How much do you want to spend?

I want to spend less then $200... but I'm afraid I won't be getting a good instrument for that. So I am thinking maybe no more then $500.

In that case I'd suggest you go to http://www.violinslover.com and buy yourself a Gliga. I think they are extremely hard to beat in that price bracket.

Do not buy anything with a bird in it eg lark or parrot brands. more often then not they are sound awful! i know its a student violin but you want all the help you can get! i took a risk buying my violin of trademe (like ebay) and paid NZ$250 and i was quite lucky. if you look around you can find some.

I got to try the full Yamaha range at a trade fair a couple of years ago. In my opinion they are grossly overpriced.
