Nope, I wouldn't say so too.
That was my attitude 5 years ago when I decided to learn how to play. I didn't know how to read music, but I learned during the way.
But let me warn you ~ its not gonna be easy at first. You gotta have the passion to play, even if it sounds like a saw at first. Don't get frustrated if people criticize your playing - keep practicing, 'cause thats what I did. 5 years ago, my mom commented on my playing and said that it sounded bad. But just last week, she cried when I played her favorite songs.
Also, my advice is that you find a good teacher. You can't really 'learn' to play the violin on your own. You'll only get frustrated.
Goodluck!

you are a beginner, buy something cheap that sounds ok. not cheap cheap, but not like $1000. that way you will know whether or not you wish to keep playing. then again if you don't want to keep playing, more expensive violins are easier to sell.
BUT YOU WON'T BE SELLING YOURS OF COURSE.
don't worry about learning the violin at your age. i did start playing violin in yr 9 (nz) at school. at my school we have an itinerant music scheme where the teacher comes to our school to give us lessons. check out your music department to see if you have the same thing. if you do there is the possibility you can hire a violin. they will probably be reasonably ok but not great. this is also a cheap way to learn an instrument. it cost me only NZ$45 a year for lessons and hire. NZ$15 if i had my own instrument. this was subsidised by our local government and school though, for all of the people totally outraged by my EXTREMELY cheep lessons. and the teachers aren't bad either.
the hardest thing you will find in the beginning is the excersizes your teacher gives you and not being able to read music. find a suzuki teacher if you can. i could not read music when i began and the music is notated like tab above the actual music. this means that you don't have to concentrate on learning how to read music but on your playing technique, which is more important. this saves you having to learn two things at once, only the one (slightly harder) thing. after a while you will be able to read music as easy as you read anything else.
but if you really love the sound and are excited about giving it a go do it! the song the devil goes down to georgia by the charlie daniels band is the reason i started playing.
go to your music store and check out the violins they have there. yamaha and even ashton are good brands for a beginner. i don't know if you can ashton outside of australasia. i think they are made in aussie...
find a violin teacher and ask them for advice if you want to speak to someone in person.
i will now end my novel.
good luck!
