Um, a pick-up
itself doesn't amplify the sound; it transduces sound into an electrical current which can be amplified (with an amplifier, natch) and then transduced back into sound (with a speaker).

Matter of opinion (or scale, I suppose). I’d say it changes it a
lot—and invariably for the worse (unless it’s awful to begin with and you disguise it with some gimmick like artificial reverb).
