ok, so i don't really know whats a pickup or amp on an accoustic violin do? does it make the sound better or can you still play nicely without it?

Um, a pick-up itself doesn't amplify the sound; it transduces sound into an electrical current which can be amplified (with an amplifier, natch) and then transduced back into sound (with a speaker).

Doesn't change it too much...

Matter of opinion (or scale, I suppose). I’d say it changes it a lot—and invariably for the worse (unless it’s awful to begin with and you disguise it with some gimmick like artificial reverb).
