I haven't heard of a silent violin (kinda thinking to myself, what would be the point) an electric would be basically silent as it has no space for the vibration of the string to resonate, thats what the pick ups do. and i think its not so good if a fully electric violin does have a slightly resonating body as this effects the sound. so with out and amp an electric would affectively be silent, but i don't know if this is what you mean.

a silent violin is virtually the same thing as an electric violin.
it's considered silent because you plug in headphones (apposed to using an amp) and that way you can practice with out disturbing other people.
personally, i think i may get the yamaha SV- 120.
you can use either headphones or an amp.
and it looks awesome too haha
