Hi guys, I`m just wondering if it is possible to learn on an electric violin or is it completely different to playing the acoustic instrument?
E.g if you had learned on and only played an electric violin could you then pick up an acoustic violin and play no problem or would there be slight or big differences that would require a lot of adjustment??
Thanks

If your talking about the electric violins that plug into an amp, then no, there really is no difference IMHO, aside from the sound.

Do you think this would be a vaible way to learn as I have problems with neighbours and would need to keep the volume pretty low on the amp??

IMHO, it would be ok to learn this way, as long as the volume on your amp is set to a minimum. The omly problem you might have when switching over to a normal violin is that the produced sound will be different.

It would be pretty much the same besides the sound and the weight (maybe) of the violin. What might get annoying is that you have to lug your amp everywhere you want to perform, and few orchestras accept people with electric violins. It`s good to practice on though, since you have some control over the volume.

I have heard that several schools have bought electric instruments, as they claim it`s easier to get a good tone quickly, on an electric compared to an acoustic.
This reduces the amount of frustration during the early years.
