OK, so I'm having issues with a few things, particularly with my bow technique:
1.) There's a bowing that i find particularly challenging, and it's one staccato eighth note, next to three slurred eighth notes. My initial assumption was that you play both the staccato note and the slurred notes with the same bow direction (up up, or down down), but my teacher says you play them each with their own bow direction, so down bow on the staccato, and up bow for the three slurred notes. I'm finding this incredibly hard, as I have to keep the bowing even, but I risk playing the staccato too long, or risk not using enough bow for the tied notes (so my tone deteriorates). Anyone have any suggestions?
2.) I need to apply a lot of rosin, as my bow does not retain it well. I even find that I need to apply rosin multiple times per day (depending how long I'm practicing). I know how I want my violin to sound, and honestly, I'm not even sure what a scratchy tone is (too much rosin) because all I get is a weak and airy tone. Is it my bow? Rosin? Violin? or am I not applying rosin correctly?
My violin and bow are student quality ( The Palatino VN-350, not sure where the bow is from...), and the rosin I use is a "Super-Sensitive" Mini-rosin cake.
Thank you.
