Electric Violin not making any noise!

I just bought a Sojing electric violin (plastic, from eBay) for my friend for Christmas because she wanted to start learning an instrument. I've inserted the battery and it appears to be working but it's not making any noise when plucked or played. I've already toggled with the volume and tone and tried with headphones and amp - there just appears to be no noise.

It's rather frustrating, and safe to say my gift-giving experienced a huge anticlimax. It didn't come with a manual so I'm not sure if there's something I was meant to have done before turning it off... any hints?

Ah, forgot to add that we are applying rosin now but I figured that wasn't the case considering even plucking isn't creating any noise.

Thanks again!

It's real easy to leave these things on. Is the battery good? Try a new 9v battery. I have heard of a few of those cheap ear plugs not working too. Try a different head phone if replacing the battery doesn't work. You did turn it on, right? It has an on off knob as well as a volume knob.

OK just saw one where the owner set the bridge up NOT on the pickup pad (really a piezo mic) it it won't make a sound. Is your bridge set up solidly on the pick up? The feet of the bridge need to be squarely set on the bottom of the pick up too. His bridge's feet were wide, and they did not rest on the pick up, thus no sound.

Did you get the violin working? Hope so. How do you like it now? I love mine. I did add 4 new fine tuners. I play it alot with out even turning it on. Other people in the house watch TV, and complain about me practicing. They can't hear me practice on the sojing, but still complain when I practice cello.
