When trying to keep my fingers held down on one string eg.
________
o 1 2 3 4
A B C# D E
As my 4th depresses E my 2nd tends to lift. Is there a way to combat this?

Do you have small hands?

This is a common problem...my best advice is to concentrate on moving just your 4th finger, rather than your entire hand. extend from the joint. If this doesn`t work, tilt your hand slightly, but be sure to tilt it back when you release your 4th finger.

Harvey.
I can span an octave on piano and just about a 9th. I don`t think it`s a reach problem.

I`m glad it`s not just me.
My hand doesn`t move and my reach is OK.
I find if I tilt my hand toward me my elbow moves a little away from me and it does help.
I`ll keep working on that.
Thanks

Pls do this ex. to solve the problem: B(1) E(4) to be pressed together on the finger board, and done without bow. Then do this: B(1) E(4) B(1) with the bow, and when yr pressing the E, remember to hold onto the previous B note. Dun let go. If u can`t do it, n.v.m. Caz alot of pianist will have this problem when doing a string instrument. Caz, the piano works in a slightly different way compared to the strings. We are always told to hold the fingers one by one in position when moving on the fingerboard, but dun need to move in this way for the piano. That`s why yr fingers are going up. Nothing to do with the size of yr hand/ length of fingers. Hope u understand!

I think I`m getting it. As I press B E at the same time my pinky has all the strength unless I balance the pressure.
So if I concentrate on B`s pressure It should solve the problem.
Am I getting there?
In everyday usage our index finger is usually stonger than our pinky but in the violin`s left hand position the reverse seems to be true.
Phew!
Thanks
