Can we use alcohol on the chin rest to clean it? How can it be kept clean?

A little water and a bit of tissue to dry it shoudl suffice. What`s dirty about your rest?

Mine gets a bit greasy from skin contact, so I wipe it with a duster occasionally.

Thanks Martin. Was referring to the grease. I used dab tissue with alcohol and all grease came off.

Hi Shandy,

Is your chinrest plastic or wood? I don`t think alcohol would hard plastic, but it might over time be detrimental to the wood - I don`t know, I`m just guessing.

Hi Martin

It`s wood. Alcohol does a really clean job though compared to water. Or perhaps mild detergent once a week would do fine? Just worried about bacteria/ germs breeding in the wood and cause skin problem.

Thanks again.

I`m not sure that alcohol or detergent is a good idea . . .

It might damage the wood. Better talk to someone who knows what`s best for you instrument. It`s not worth risking if you`re not sure.

using a cloth dampened with water would be as far as i would go. i really wouldn`t want to take a chance with anything else...but maybe a little, TINY bit of salt wouldn`t hurt? salt is a kind of anti-septic...i would just wipe it down with a damp cloth regularly to prevent build up...i never really do that though...my chin rest doesnt really get dirty...i actually polish it sometimes. but perhaps a polish with a citrusy sort of base would help, too...chances are, your local music supply store would have the answer. good luck!
