Hey guys, I don`t play any string instruments or anything, and I`m not too accustomed to writing for strings, but I`m writing some variations on Greensleeves for a string quartet and I just wanted to know what the ranges for each instrument were, and anything else I might need to know....
Thanks!!

It gives ranges for most instruments in orchestra.

And one imp thing : Knowing the range is not enough. u need to know the character of the instrument itself. And most importantly, the ability of yr quartet players. IE: A cello can go all way up to treble clef high E and so on, but not all cellists are capable of playing in such high positions. So, u better check with yr string players on their individual ability b4 writing anything. It`ll be hard to make amendments or compromises later on.
