ehh i`m jus gonna get back to the original question if that`s alright. when playing fer somthing like a Christian Worship Band, some people will just take the top note of every chord and play that. let`s say if u h`ve a G chord they would play a D b/c that`s the top note. or u can do what i do, just play the note they give but improv or play around w/ it. Like what i do is this, let`s use G again,. G is written as the chord, well i know that in the G scale there is one sharp which is F, that means that i can play around but h`ve to make sure to hit my F# and not just a plain F, i hope that helps u, it`s kinda hard to explain over internet specially when u can`t show someone and if u h`ve troublee knowin when to switch notes fer the next chord, just listen for when the other instruments switch or if u know the song play it out in your head w/ them. Hope that helps

Hello All! My name is Leslie, I`m from north Orlando (Longwood), FL. I used to play the violin in middle school, and now I`m out of college, and VERY interested in picking it up/re-learning it. I have many questions (many of them really embarrassing to even ask!)...like...is "sheet music" for the piano the same for the violin? If I have the Passion Worship songbook, can I use that or are there "chords" or "riffs" that I need to learn how to play? I am just confused about the type of music to get...Would love your help...I`m looking forward to being a part of this forum. Thanks again.
In Christ,
Leslie

The music for piano and violin are generally not the same...although you will find that the treble cleff music of many songs are playable on the violin...but if you are playing along with the piano - the two instruments will be playing exactly the same music (in that cleff) unless one of you is able to modify it.
In our little church ensemble we play the top line of the vocal music, while the piano does it`s own thing. This is generally easier for beginning violin.
I don`t chord well (on my mandolin), so I`m not sure about translating chords/riffs, except to say I`ve never done it on my violin.
There is Sacred Music written for ensembles, I`d suggest you look into some of that for ideas beyond what the the Praise and Worship hymnals have to offer.

I can`t be bothered reading these long messages, I mean, who can actually care to write so much? Couldn`t they condense it and stop using such complex words? They all could easily do that, I mean, like totally, like, like! Anyways, by now I`ve forgotten the question so I`m going to stroll out of this Forum and leave you with one final, reminder. Condense the majority of your hints, and tips, and don`t use exemplelarily long and winding, complex. Mabye even work collaberitavly, to make your writing extraordinarily shorter, and to stop you using completly brain-annihilating words which are spelt in such an unsystematic way and are completly unreadable. It will work just like that, Abracadabra. SO PLEASE, SAVE YOURSELF THE EXTREME, EXTRAORDINARY EMBARRESMENT WHEN YOU USE ENORMOUS WORDS ABOUT A POINTLESS TOPIC, IN LONG AND BORING SENTENCES WHICH BY THE TIME YOU`VE GOTTEN HALF WAY THROUGH THEM, YOU ENTIRELY FORGET THE BEGINING SO YOU HAVE TO READ IT AGAIN BY SIMPLY CONDENSING YOUR WORK

Improvising in worship

Hi,
I`ve just found this site and was happy to see this thread. I played violin up to age 18 and then gave up for many years. I came to faith last summer and within a couple of month`s found myself in our worship group which was also new as the vicar had changed at the same time. I now play worship music every week end and love it. Mostly me on violin with a keyboard and saxiphone. Sometimes flute and clarinet join us as well.
I am just starting to experiment with improvising as we can get very melody heavy if we don`t have an arrangement. I try long notes from the key and just go up and down the arpeggio or scale. Playing the melody an octave or two higher is also quite effective. Some tunes lend themselves to playing phrases from the melody a bar or two later than everyone else. Or if you can play a harmony of the melody from time to time too.
I think the key is just to go for it. I never had never tried before and was totally lost without my sheet music but God does amazing things. Also, if you hit a wrong note most people in the congregation just would not know, believe me.
Otherwise if we are playing from the hym book or from Spring Harvest I play the alto part. We also take turns. Don`t feel you have to play every song or every verse of every song as variation helps make the music more interesting. I usually play the tune on the first verse to let the congregation get settled in and experiment later on.
We play a lot of Graham Kendrick and I would be interested if anyone had arrangements or descants for some of his music written down.
God bless
James

Wow, what a lot of good advice. I have been totally struggling with improv and worship. I usually have to pre record the music and write music to it note by note at home. I am self taught.. so I don`t know a whole lot about what is considered a chord.. anyone wanna explain? I feel retarted for not knowing.. but, I guess I will never know unless I ask
