I was just wondering (since I am going to be auditioning for my school`s Concerto Concert) where the violin soloist would be positioned traditionally when playing a concerto with an orchestra. Would they sit first chair, or would they stand away from the orchestra? Thanks!

That kind of depends. I`ve seen one girl stand up completely away from her chair and face toward the crowd and I`ve seen other people just sit in his or her chair (ALWAYS 1st chair). In high school, the only reason why that girl stood up is I guess because she was such a good violin player, better than the professionals in a symphony orchestra!

When it`s just a "Violin Solo", I sit down. When the whole thing is a "Violin Concerto", I stand up.

Yap...it really depends. But note the difference between first chair/principle violinist and concerto soloist though.

...continued...If they`re like there for u...then u should stand up. But if yr not the soloist(as in the audience are not there for u), then remain sitting. This applies even if yr a principle violinist.
