This forum has been very helpful to a beginner so, here goes again.

Last night, as I was loosening my bow, I decided to have one more go at Sally Garden (and I know how that reads) so, started out with a slightly looser bow. Obviously, with less tension, it was easier to bow but, I would assume that this is a lazy way and not to be recommended.

I prefer to play with a tighter tension, as it makes better articulation. It`s very much up to the individual, and the level of yr technic. If u can play with a tighter tension, without the bow bouncing here and there, then go for it.

Should be 8mm clearence from the wooden bit to the hair. Must be pretty exact.

Hi Jeff,

I`ve seen several of your posts, and I think like me you`re into fiddle playing, not really bothered about classical.

I tend to tighten my bow about the same every time, as above, about 8mm or a pencil width between hair and stick.

That given, some tunes require more bounce than others and I might add an extra turn on the screw if I`m looking for bounce, but the 8mm rule is a good starting point. If you find your bow bouncing too much, by all means loosen it off if that helps - as long as the stick downs`t touch the string under pressure you`re OK.
