It`s only been a few weeks but, I`m enjoying this frustrating instrument and getting on better than I thought I would. It`s time to start saving for a better model. If I use a swear box when I`m practicing I should have enough by a week on Tuesday.

I want to play traditional British music (jigs and reels etc) and would have about $800-$1000 to spend.

The ever helpful Liz is already turning her mighty brain to this problem but, any other advice would be gratefully received.

You mean pounds, Jeff, surely, not dollars. Or won`t this board take £ signs? The dollar is in freefall at the moment, great for us, bad for the Americans. Probably bad for me once gliga start charging in Euros as will almost certainly happen if the present exchange rate continues ...

Jeff, I am also looking for a better violin. The one I have (which I bought just a couple of months ago)doesn`t sound quite the way I would want it to sound. My sister says it`s mainly caused by my lack of skills with the bow. Anyhow, I would still like to save up and get a better violin.

Hi Jeff,

I`ve recently finished a 13 week course of English style fiddling. We did some nice jigs, reels (for want of a better word, though some say the English don`t do reels) and hornpipes.

Most of the fiddles I see in class are old jobs in the 40-100 year age bracket, but mine is a Gliga from Liz that was born on 31st July, and I think it stands up very well to the rigours of English fiddle playing.

Roll on Jan 7th when I start to tackle the Scottish style.

I shall now, without the aid of a safety net, attempt to answer two posts at once.

Sid

I`m glad I`m not alone but, even through the scrapes and screeches I know I`ll want a better one later on even though my current Marlborough is more than adequate and will be for a while.

Nice to hear that. That`s the way my mind`s turning. I had a play on an antique French fiddle. Nice tone but, awful looking (a bit like me). What level do you have and what strings?

If you want to complete the home countries, this might be of interest.
