I can`t help you, but I`m in the exact same boat! I got a violin for Christmas and it won`t make a sound. I can usually make a sound on other violins, but this one just isn`t working. Any tips or ideas anyone? Links to helpful sites would be good too!

Guys... I tried to teach myself out of a book once, it just doesn`t work. I gave it up in frustration. Find a teacher who can show you the right way so that you won`t end up upset and frustrated. I teach computer-aided drafting and have a lot of students who end up with me after trying to self-teach. It`s just not worth what you`ll put yourself through trying to save a few bucks. I just got a violin for christmas too... AND lessons. I have my first on Monday.

OK D, put MORE rosin on the bow. There is no other reason for you not being able to get a sound (assuming the bridge is up of course)

Many violins are shipped without the bridge in place so make sure that it is either in place or placed correctly. I think that the problem your having is that you do not have enough rosin on the bow. When you have new rosin it is usually to slick to stick to the bow, try scrape the top of the rosin so that it is rough and then try to rosin the bow. New bows need to be rosined more than a bow that has already been used.

I finally got it. A friend of mine from Nashville, kinda scratched the rosin with a knife, and then pulled the bow throught it and it now makes a lot of noise. Hopefully not just noise for long.

You`re pretty good all ready. When you say that to some beginners you get "Rosin? What`s that?"

guy`s don`t worry it happens all the time. buy rosin and went you get one scratch the top with a key and use it on the bow, when you think its time just use the backside of your finger and rub lightly on the hair if it`s white thats enough and play.or the hair might be lose

*eep*...do not touch the bow hair with your fingers (no matter which side) the oils from your skin will keep the rosin from sticking. And if you`re rosining correctly...you won`t need to `redistribute` the rosin.

Also be careful of over-rosining...I`m practicing 1- 1 1/2 hrs a day right now, and still only rosin maybe once a week. Seems about right.
