The string has to touch the wood, except high on metal E-strings.

Shifting to the correct place is like having good intonation. For me, getting good intonation was playing it enough so that my muscles automatically want to move the right way. So just do it enough times, and memorize how it feels like. Why do you think you`re so good at walking? (I`m assuming you can walk.)

I started fourth position before third. If it`s higher than that, I don`t even think about it.

Ahmed,

You have to press the string right down. If not then you are playing harmonics.

Sorry, I don`t understand the terminology used here.

The strings are all a perfect fifth apart, does that help?

Ahmed, the correct tuning is as you said, G4 D5 A5 E6 (thanks to Cakewalk Music creator!)

I am also a self-taught student and it is going to take time before you can do vibrato. It`s a technique that is hard to write down. However, try searching the forums for "Vibrato" and I`ll bet you`ll have many results!

Practise and watch others. That`s all I`ve done to learn. I suppose it was handy knowing how to read music beforehand, but if you watch how others play and keep trying you`ll get better every day.

Hi everybody,
I `d like to know something,please.
when i shift from the string (D) to the string (A) i feel that the sound became hard(i mean not soft as if i played the note on string D)
also the same thing happens in string (E).
Is there a problem in my violin or what?

You will certainly get a different tone if you play the same note on the D string than if you play it on the A string. That`s why co,mposers use directions like "sul D" (on the D), to indicate that they want the particular tone that can be acheived by playing high up on the D string.

Try `Sevcik shifting the positions` It moves you through all the positions on half or whole step at a time.... This helps with shifiting technique more htant specific positions which is what it sounds like you need

keep in mind that your fingers have to get closer and closer together the higher you shift, because of the lenghth of the string it self!!!

I will be grateful if you could send me a site name to learn these tech.s such as (Sul D) or give me Your Hotmail E-mail (if you want) just to chat with you. Because i feel that the note on a string is different from the same not on any other string and this is boring .
Thanks a lot
