Sometimes the resin is to hard, and will make only a faint dust. What I found is effective is hold the resin over a boiling kettle for 10-15 seconds and then rub on your bow. Your resin will be softer after that. If you don`t have resin, and don`t want any, might as well sell your violin, you`ll never make a noise of well, violin without resin.

what i found annoying with new rosin
was that its always really shiney and tends to just slip across your bow.
what i used for this was to rub the surface of the rosin with sand paper
or a nail file or somthing.
to make it easeier to use the rosin e.g. stop it slipping off your bow
use a 3/4 inch chisle and make an indent in to the thing.
careful though you could end up smashing the whole thing to pieces.
