You`re definitely not too old. I started violin when i was 23.5 years old, which is exactly two years ago. I`ll be taking violin grade 7 exams this year. I used to be a classical guitarist. I`ve been playing the guitar for 10 years before switching to the violin. I`m improving very quickly in my violin. I will take grade 8 violin next year, go on the take DipABRRSM in violin performance the following year, followed by LRSM and FRSM in the following two consecutive years. It is tough, but i will do whatever it takes to do it. If i can do it, i don`t see why you can`t.

i had my first lesson yesterday... my teacher [She`s a genuine multi-instrumentalist] took my violin...i hadn`t have any idea how beatifully they could play. Now the only thing i want to do is practice practice and learn some more :c) I`ve become addicted to violin i think :P

Just comparing notes with serious younger players (all instruments) I noticed the difference in practice time. I manage to get in 1/2 - 1 1/2 hours most days (not all). They say they practice 2-5 hours a day.

If this is true - it makes a BIG difference in how quickly you progress. I`m coming along, albeit slowly with my practice time...I`d be moving so much faster if I doubled that time.

I would just like to say how much I agree with Nox on his comments about practicing. I have respect for musical prodigies, but I have more resect for a person who practices enough to become as good as he wants to be. And thats the only thing that is going to make a person better. No matter what you were born with. A person who practices is going to be good. And that my advice for a person who really cares and who really wants to make it. Don`t be daunted by the amount of musical prodigies. You have the ability to be at their level and to even pass them up.

abaout practice: I have a gigantic amount of free time [although i`m a student] which i will gladly willing to spend on practicing. I will do whatever it takes to be the best! right now i`m playing most of the time full volume but in the evening i play with a silencer. right now i`m playing 3-4 hours a day. and i want to play some more :c) i think i just got addicted to violin :c))

Of course you aren`t too old! Violin is a fairly easy instrument to use and if you practice hard, in a few years, you`ll be playing like a pro! I really think you should take it up. I mean, what harm can it do? You have the rest of your life ahead of you and if you didn`t start violin 20 years ago, that doesn`t mater.

Thanks also to everyone that replied - I turn 23 in 2 days time and i`ve been wanting to take up the violin for a while now but haven`t had the guts to and thought it`d be too hard. Now i`ve found out that it`s not a very difficult instrument to learn, and so I`ll be starting (hopefully) my learning next week sometime!

For anyone holding down a full time job, commuting to and from work, and who intends to eat and sleep during part their leisure hours, 5 hours a day just isn`t possible.

Lucky students! Practise while you can!
