Hello everyone,
I would like to buy a violin but can anyone tell me what are the things which i should look out for when buying a violin?

And is it possible to learn how to play the violin myself?

as for the violin - the most important thing is how it sounds :P remember - not always looks count.
as for learning - well it is possible to learn by yourself, but propably u won`t be able to achieve the level of play. Take atleast a couple of lessons with a teacher - believe me they will be VERY helpfull!!!

Yep - Its good to read all that, good vibes aplenty! I can really relate to the whole starting the violin `late` thing, I have just turned 23 and have been playing for a year. Gotta say a few things

1: To really advance properly and to learn how to teach oneself, (how to practise effectively) one really needs regular contact with a good teacher (I found a wonderful teacher in a violinist just finishing the conservatoire)

2: Yep- Student (and single) life is really a wonderful opportunity to get a great practise regime into your daily lives

3: Gotta keep those "what if I started when I was four?" thoughts outta your head- its really about learning with a different spirit... our maturity means that we can learn certain aspects of playing differently than children but got to keep an eye on old habits that we have (another reason why it helps to be followed by another violinist)---relax, breath and work smart, do your best listen to yourself and rejoice in every beautiful moment.

Gee now I`m bla bla-ing. Does anyone know of any examples of violinists who started at a later age and went on to make a career with their violin? It sure would be reassuring to see that its possible.

How did that concert go by the way?

the concert went hmm.. well :P i played along with my teacher and it went smoothly, but i learnt, that i still have a LONG road ahead of me :c) but i like it really And You`re right: practising and keeping the regime of practice is really a good thing not only for the play itself but in whole life. BTW a friend of mine made a sheet of "summer overture" from "requiem for a dream". Anyone interested please write below or mail me

Well how`s your practice Kakaroth? I remember when I started taking violin, my friends and I had a group lessons every week. When the teacher asked one of us to play, we couldn`t stop laughing, just because the sound produced was so squeaky. It was like someone in the pain. It turned out to be the fun moments. Lucky that the teacher was so kind and patient.
