You`ve been on this forum long enough not to expect a simple answer

There has been much discussion on fine tuners on the various fiddle forums and, of course, this being the violin, no firm concensus. Tuning with the pegs ain`t easy, I`m getting closer after three months but, I still need fine tuners. There are those who say that fine tuners affect the sound but, believe me, the only thing that will have any effect on the sound for quite a while will be you.

Don`t feel discouraged by this, all of us beginners are in the same boat, but all of us are throughly enjoying ourselves

I can tune without the fine tuners, but I prefer them...it`s easier and saves a little wear and tear on the pegs. Frankly, I can`t hear the difference between a violin with/without all 4 fine tuners. I had them put on my recent violin and am very pleased, these are very small and light and easy to use. I think there might be quality differences among the different brands as well - get good ones (the ones on my old violin are terrible). And don`t forget, you can always remove them if and when you decide you don`t need them. I`m not planning on removing mine...like I said...much more convenient to tune.

It`s more to do with the type of strings you use than anything else. Metal strings simply can`t be used with adjusters, gut strings simply can`t be used with them. Some strings, such as Dominants, work equally well either way.

Sorry Liz, I think you made an error...which can/can`t be used with adjustors? I only use metal strings - so I imagine that`s the ones you meant should have adjustors?
