Hello all,
I am writing a childrens book about a 12 year old violin player. I have no knowledge whatsoever about the violin, and I`m not very musical! In my book, my character is practicing for a violin solo (she has been playing the violin for about 2 years). Can anyone tell me some names of songs or musical pieces someone at her level of experience may play as a solo in a school recital? Also, in the book, the violin instructor refers to his great-grandfather, who "made" violins for a living. Does anyone know if there a name for this profession?
I greatly appreciate your help with my research.

I think the suzuki pieces mentioned might be a little easy for a twelve year old, even if she`s only been playing for two years. Is this a particular kind of piece (like, for a christmass recital, or is it a fiddle tune or a classical piece...) is she an exceptionaly good player or average? What kind of music does she like? More info would be good
Good luck with your book!

Probably not a helpful comment, but if this is the first book about this girl, any reason she couldn`t start younger? Violin is often taught to very young chidren, I was six when I started, and they start them even earlier now!
As asked above, more info on how good this girl is supposed to be would help - does she enjoy practising & performing, or do all her friends think she is nerdy? etc.

Thank you all for your comments. Just some background - my character started playing the violin at 10. She has a rented instrument because owning one is just not in the budget. She is an intermediate player who is passionate about practicing. Her friends think she is a freak because she`d rather practice than hang out with them.
She has been chosen to play a solo in the school recital and I want to refer to that piece of music by name. Any suggestions?

Perhaps the Vivaldi concerto in A Minor (he wrote a few but I`m referring to Op 3 No 6 from L`Estro Armonico). A lot of intermediate-level violinists play it and readers who play violin might recognise a reference to it...pretty much every violinist I know has played at least one movement from it (there are three). It`s in Suzuki books four and five and some AMEB extra lists, or grade four or five or something...The character would have to be pretty amazingly talented to be able to play it in two years though. Maybe a Bach Minuet is more suitable to two years of practice. Or Dvorak`s Humoresque, from Suzuki book 3 and AMEB grade..ummm....2??...is very pretty and quite popular, and someone who was talented and worked very hard at violin might be able to play it after two years

Yeah, I agree that Humoresque would be a good choice. It`s hard to think of interesting and well known pieces for that level of playing, except for the Suzuki pieces that everyone plays.
