it`s no trick, you just have to sit and learn them [witha teacher hopefuly]it`s something that comes from practising only.

Hi Bekah,
I don`t fully understand your question, do you mean you are having trouble reading sheetmusic, and relating it to where to put your fingers on the violin fingerboard, or are you having trouble playing note in tune, i.e. intonation?
To relate notes on the music to the violin, on the treble clef the lines from the bottom up are EGBDF - every good boy deserves fun. The spaces spell FACE.
The note hanging directly below the bottom line is D - your open D string, second string up. The A space is the A string, and the top space is the E string.
Hope that helps, Martin

Well, you see, the trouble is that the notes aren`t on the violin. They are on the music in front of you.
Seriously, though
The lines (from the bottom up) are
E (equivalent to 1st finger, D string)
G
B
D
F
and the spaces are
F (2nd finger, D string)
A
C
E
As the music gets higher, the notes are written higher. As the music gets lower, the notes are written lower.

Hey, here`s an idea for you.
When you know which note is which on the stave, write the letter of the note underneath the note, so that not only will you be able to play, but you will also be learning note names at the same time.
As many other people have said in this thread, it takes practice. I mean, I used to play piano and I`ve been playing voilin for 2 weeks, but I still can`t recognise a note quickly. I have to write note names below the note.
Believe me, practice makes perfect

It really sounds like your teacher is letting you down and you need a different one. I can`t conceive of a teacher who would fail to help you with the basics liek this, it`s appalling.

It`s really sad, because i first learned how to play notes on the violin in relation with "if the note is here play third finger" I was a quick learner, but i actually learned that before the note names themselves... I guess it worked for me, but I think it is good to learn the names first, It`ll help decipher key signatures, and what not. Luke`s way looks pretty good. I also know there are some computer programs out there that can quiz you on reading notes.. I`m not sure what it is called, but my private teacher has it for the really little kids learning piano.
