Hi, my name is Zhen and i`m in a high school orchestra and that`s it. I would like to be a better player but i don`t know how to start.
i`m not that great at sightreading, mostly because of counting and if the notes get past 3rd postion, then i`m out of luck.
ANy tips to be a better player?
please, if you have any exercises, please to tell me.

Don`t see what you are exactly asking for, but practise slowly with a metronome if you have trouble counting rythmns.

This was previously brought up on http://www.soloviolin.com
And this was my reply:
If u speed up/slowed down or whatever the case when yr doing orchestra/ensemble/duet, then the real problem doesn`t lie in counting/keeping/following the pulse. Rather, it lies in your ears and ability to associate with other instruments. My suggestion...dun be too absorbed in your own playing...but learn to listen to othes more.
It`s good to learn to follow the metronome...but if u can`t n.v.m. I can`t either...and alot of musicians can`t either. Do u do vibrato `zhen`? Caz the real counting method for a violinist doesn`t lie with the beat/ ...it lies in the LH. Use yr vibrato to count. This is how we count in the orchestra, and we never got lost, even if Mark Wigglesworth is the resident conductor( The conductor who reputedly conducts only with his facial expression, u never get an obvious downbeat from him). There`s always the wrong perspective that the violinist counts with the RH( the bowing distribution as an end result of counting...as u count when u bow)...but actually that`s wrong...the main feel of pulsation is coming from the LH... The LH is supposed to do the counting...using the even oscillation as a guideline when u vibrate. Hmmm...do u understand? Man! This is hard to explain. The even ocsillation makes u right on beat...as opposed to counting with the RH...U`ll tend to do over dotted rhythm, or end the minim a 1/16th too short, esp. during bow changes.

Counting with vibrato? Wouldn`t that make your vibrato sound too mechanical? Also note that you won`t be vibratoing for the whole song.

hi
i also am in a high school orchestra playing the violin, but i haven`t ever really had trouble besause i was also taking private lessons at the same time. if you cant afford that or watever try asking sum1 4 help like the conductor, or a fellow violinist. it is realy hard to learn how 2 play an insrument better through a message board. something that helps me though, is listining to a piece on a tape or CD b4 i play it, so i no wat it is supose 2 sound like and how long 2 hold a note 4.
hope ive helped u
