hi, well they are a set of peices, studies and scales that are played in an exam. the peices are really cool too. If you choose a coureer in music, grades are and important thing to mention as that can assist in what position you are put in orchestras. there are many different examinations you can take but the most common in australia (sorry where are you from. sometimes they are around the world) are the ameb exams. i have recently completed my grade 5. the grades range from preliminary to grade eight. talk to your tutor or a local music shop that may have some info abou them. you can also get the music books practically anywhere. please reply if you want the address of the exam board. i hope i have answered your questions.
luv

hiya, in Wales you go from grade 1-grade 8
it is directed by The Associated Board Of Royal School of Music. basically all it is, is an exam. you have to learn scales by heart, 3 pieces of music sicght reading and an oral test. there quite good to do, you learn how to perform in front of different pieces and they really makes sure you practice.
Grades are also good if you want to go into music as a career or join an orchestra. hope that helped abit, blah blah blah!!!
