New instruments that are cheap never sound good.
Phil,
And a old Stadivarious for example can cost you well over $100,000. Strads aren`t the only old expensive instruments that sound good. Not to mention violins with no names because they aren`t usually worth much but sound good as expensive violins($20,000+).

I have an old violin that reads: Josef Guarnerius. It has a picture of a bow tie inside and it also says Rowl Lederer. It had been in the family for a long time. What do you think it could be worth?
Thanks

I meant the old violins that aren`t messed up and broken all to pieces. The older a stringed instrument is, the better it sounds, and the rarer it is the more it`s worth. There is no way I would spent $20,000 for a new sringed instrument when I can buy an old one that sounds the same for several times less.
p.s.,
Most people that sell stringes instruments like the violin, viola, cello and bass for less than $400 don`t even play the instrument, more or less know what it even is.

Sean, face it, ANY violin will improve with age. Saying that ALL old violins are better than ALL new violins is simply rubbish.
Would you choose a maidstone over a master made new violin, for example? Hardly.

I also have an old violin that was handed down to me. I am not sure that it is worth anything other than sentimental value but it was purchased at an estate auction many years ago. The violin has a label inside that says Stradivarius but I have been told that is common. However, the case is falling apart and is made of tin and covered in an old black paperlike material. The handle is rusted metal and the case appears very old. I figure the case may indicate more than the violin may. Can you guide me to someon who can help?
Thanks.
