I am 17 and I just bought a violin. I truly have no idea what I am doing with it. However, I play piano, guitar, bass guitar and drums. Are the chords the same as piano and guitar? I was wondering if anyone could tell me a good place to find printable fingerings and chord charts. One other question I had is how much rosin am I supposed to put on the bow? Do I put it on before each time playing? Thank you very much.

well for rosin go up and down, up and down, 10 times. And put it on every time you play. And make sure you loosen the bow each time you put the bow back into the case. I don`t play piano or gutiar so I don`t know about the cords.

Thanks for your help! Does anyone else know about where to find printable chord charts or fingering charts?

You don`t chord on a violin like you do on the other instruments. It`s difficult to play more than two strings at a given time (although that does happen for `special effects` on occasion in some music). Playing two strings at the same time is called double stops.

There are fingering charts on the web, not too hard to find in a search. Most beginner books have charts, or partial charts. If you need more than a 1st position chart, it`s fairly easy to figure out on your own.

you could also cut 2 straws in half, and stick them in the f-holes. tell your friend to bow between the bridge and and straws. it kinda helps. (becareful not to let the straws drop inside the body)

Rachel - another idea for you if your friend is still having trouble bowing is to get her to bow through an empty toilet roll (make sure you are not using a bow with expensive hair on it!) This will allow her to develop the correct wrist action in her right hand while keeping the bow going straight. It helped me when i started and i always use this technique for my pupils !
