i didnt learn with the tape. my teacher like almost burned me because i didnt have my fingers in the right place. haha save your self the frustration and use it. but yes, after a while you sort of have to take it off.

as for the violin... i started when i was 9... playing on a half size, are you sure that violin isnt a bit to big? to check you have to put the violin against the persons neck where it would be when you play, and extend the persons arm against the bottom of the violin all the way, and if it wraps around that, round thing (what do you call it again) tightly its the right size. so ye, look around.

no tape!!!!!!!    17:09 on Saturday, December 25, 2004

Yes they should be able to reach around the scroll without completely straightening ou their arm.

For tape, I use this craft tape that I found at Staples. It`s meant for wood, and it`s removable with no residue. So far it`s working great for my students.

Well, first, put stickers or tape where her fingers should go. Demonstrate for her the correct sound often. Always be watching her and ask her to check her finger position. If she tries to play with her palm against the neck, tell her that her wrist must be straight in order to play (that should prevent her from playing with the palm too high or the hand at a weird angle). Push her elbow underneath the violin and get her to bring her hand around more.

As far as her bow -- make sure it`s rosined properly. Then ask her to play AAEEAA, and to keep the bow straight as she does it. Explain to her about the tilt of the bow, the placement of the bow, and the pressure of the bow. Help her discover the right way to do it by playing only open strings until she understands, and by demonstrating yourself.

Think about getting her a teacher -- if she`s just messing with it, it`s okay that you`re showing her. But if she wants to be really good at it, it`s nice that you`re showing her the beginnings, but she needs a skilled teacher to really help her.
