I`ve been interested in learning to play the violin for quite a long while now (since I was about 9, I`m 15 now) and I was wondering how much it would cost to take lessons. I understand that it varies from place to place but can anyone give me an estimate? How expensive is a very basic, beginning violin/bow/case ect? Is it very difficult to learn how to play? I`m interested in learning to play classical music. I can`t read music, but I`ve been introduced to it very lightly before. I would appreciate it very much If you have any opinions, suggestions or advice you`d like to offer me.

You can by a begginer violin for around £70-£120 complete with bow and case (dont forget to buy the rosin!). As for lessons I paid £10 for half an hour which I think is the average price (depending on the tutor and quality of lessons etc). Once you get going its just a matter of practicing and actually enjoying it! I started playing two years ago aged 17 with a student stentor outfit. Hows that?

thank you very much for all your help! I have purchased my violin and it is a dipalo violin. I think that company has a reputable background. What do you guys think? and is rosin absolutely necessary? Can I play without it?

Yes yes yes!! you neeeeeed rosin! Some bows need it less then others but u still need it!! My first violin i used rosin every time i played but my current one needs it rarely, But u will really need it in the beginning, u may actually need to wash the bow hair. Good luck!

i`m 22 and have wanted to play the violin ever since I can remember. I play a lot of other instruments. Tonight I just bid on and won a clarinet from ebay. I`ve never played that before either. I have a nack for teaching myself how to play instruments.
Is the violin something I could teach myself?
I`ve heard that string instruments are different in that respect.
Furthermore I have no clue the cost of a decent violin or decent brand name let alone what size I would need to play.
I am 57 inches tall. given that info can anyone tell me what size I need?
Feedback is well appriciated.
Thanks in advance,
Tanya

I live in Canada, and I had a private university student to teach me folk, I wasn`t paying the lessons, but I think it was about CDN$20 per 1 hour lessons. But now I want to learn classical, and my teacher is moving, so I need to find a new one. Problem is, there`s nothing where I live, so it`s pretty hard finding music lessons.
