Beginner - Problems with the bow

I`m a real beginner, with my brand new (and cheap as dirt) violin. I`ve got it strung and tuned, but I can`t for the life of me get the bow to play. It makes a very faint sound on each string, but I can`t get it any louder - no real "violin" sound.

Does the bow need to be tighter? Have I set the bridge too close to the fingerboard? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Put rosin on it, in vast quantities.

After you have played just be sure that you clean the rosin off the violin. Never leave the rosin on the instrument it can harded and ruin the finish.

ya need to put roslyn on that bow which will make it sound better but never ever put a lot of roslyn on it....or it would make still no sound with to much....

OH and if that doesn`t work stop by a repair shop to see is the sound post isn`t broken

"ruin the finish"
I`m not sure if I would care much for the finish of a "cheap as dirt" violin.

Having rosin stains on the violin doesn`t affect the sound in any appreciable way. It just looks ugly. And if you rosin right (and use good rosin) in the first place, a sweep of the hand after every session would keep it clean. You still have to clean it regularly though.
