Hi, I`m Steve 22 from the UK. I`ve been playing about 2 months now, after switching from guitar to violin. I`m searching for tutition at the moment but have researched into great detail about playing the violin for the first time. I have good posture and bow technique so that isn`t a problem. My problem is on my left hand. My knuckle on my first finger where it touches the neck of the violin is getting sore. I`m not gripping hard so why is it hurting? Any ideas?

Whats the point in a message board if it is ruined by idiots making half witted comments about annoying americans? Can anyone actually play the violin here or have you all only seen one recently?

I can play the violin a little, but the main instrument I play is the cello.

Assuming you`re playing with correct posture, then there are several reasons you may be experiencing pain.
a - you are not used to the often awkward hand positions of the violin
b - you are gripping too hard (beginners often do not realize that very little "squeezing" is needed, whether you tap or press down with all your might, a very similar sound will be produced.
c - you have arthritis .
j/k on the last one ...
and thank you steve! I am also sick of idiotic people making posts and they seriously don`t know what they`re talking about. I do believe they just like the sound of their own voice (or in this case, seeing their names in print)

Hi Steve,
I used to teach violin and I`ve never heard of anyone getting sore there. Have you got your wrist well away from the neck of the violin? You want a continuos curve from elbow through wrist to finger.

Steve
About your sore finger. When we first learn guitar we`re taught to keep our thumb at the back of the neck. With violin it`s different. Maybe that`s where the problem starts. Check out thumb placement.

Just put some cream on it, if you have a beginner violin.
Or you can put some band-aid on the sore bit, if you don`t want a greasy violin.
