Which Violin and where?

Hi all,

I would love to be able to play the Violin, I am fortunate enough to be able to play the Saxophone (reasonably well) and would like to try a 2nd instrument. The Violin.
Which Violin would you recommend to a starter (max £160 UK pounds to start with) and what extras will I need? Are there any real good tuition books available? I like to be able to play a few notes/tunes BEFORE I go to a tutor.

BTW what does the 4/4 & 1/4 mean, I presume this is size, in which case what is the standard size of a violin, I am a reasonably large person so presume I would need a 4/4 or is it more to do with tone?

Appreciate any help/advice on this matter.

Regards

Darren C

Hi Darren,

At the risk of being immodest, we have by far the best value in the UK.

Yes, you need a 4/4

Thnx,

Can I ask for an opinion on a student violin?
How does the Strunal 920 compare to the Gliga Gems2?
Also can I be bold and say you sell the 205wa for 230 but on ebay its 260, is this because of extras?
Would that be a good starter? I have been talking to the wife and agreed that spending a slightly larger amount may be of benefit, that way I should not have to upgrade so quickly (I did that with the Sax).

Sorry for all the Q`s

Regards
Darren

# It`s louder and brighter, not as well set up though. #

Also can I be bold and say you sell the 205wa for 230 but on ebay its 260, is this because of extras?

# (blush) no ... we made a mistake. Now you`re going to ask me which price is a mistake aren`t you Thing is, we import direct so there`s no list price as such so it`s a case of working out a normal margin and with exchange rates and calculations of VAT and so on it`s easy to get it wrong ... that`s my excuse and I`m sticking to it Obviously if someone points out such an error to us we`d stick with the lower price unless the error was horrendous (like missing a zero!)#

Would that be a good starter?

# Yes, but for me I`m always going to go for Gliga, I`m simply in love with Gliga. However if you don`t like dark tones then Strunal is certainly worth considering (we have by far the lowest price in the UK) #

Thanks Liz,
I have been in contact with somebody else who owns a Gigla. Looks like this is going to be my choice.
Just need to figure out wether Gems 1 or 2 I think

Thee`s pros and cons in everything. Strunals are popular in the US and historically have been popular here though Chinese violins have rather eaten into the popularity of the Czech ones these days. It`s always a matter (for most of us!) of taking account of what is available for what price at the time you buy.
