Hi,

My School has a few places available for Violin and Viola. I know what a Violin is but not to sure about a Viola.
What is the difference and which would be better to start out with?

Thanks

Ste

A viola is a bit bigger, and the strings are tuned a fifth lower.
If you want to play both, I`d start with violin and play a similar-sized viola when I want to start viola.

IMO, you will be much more appreciated in your orchestra if you take the viola.

Try and listen to solo recording from both (no accompaniment!) and go with what sound appeals to you most...

...just remember, if you play the viola most of the orchestra music you play is harmony...you rarely carry the melody...
