my new violin`s pegs won`t stay tight, so I can tune it. I know I shouldn`t have messed with it, but that bridge thing keeps popping out and I think I just majorly screwed up my new violin. The pegs were loose when I first took it out of the case. So it wasn`t holding the strings tight to begin with. How can I fix this? It`s a cheap violin and I can`t afford to take it anywhere. Thank-you to all of you who answered my previous question.

Don`t panic, it`s probably nothing much.

Push the pegs inwards as you turn them, that should solve that one.

Now the bridge should go against the notches in the f holes (that`s somewhat simplified but will certainly do for a start). Loosen the strings off a bit, put the bridge in place and start by tightening up one string at a time just to the point where it holds the bridge. When you`ve got all four holding the bridge (and you will need to keep pulling the top of the bridge back towards you) then tune the strings.

These days, assuming it is a new violin, it is unlikely that the bridge is so bad that it really won`t stay up. If you put it in place, do the feet seem to fit? If they don`t fit at all then it won`t stand up and your best bet then is to buy an adjustable bridge.
