1. I play the cello and I need help on the thumb positions are you supposed to leave your hand on the strings when you shift?

(I also play the Cello) :-)

1. Anyway, it`s just like having 2 index fingers. Treat your thumb like it`s a second index finger and play the music.

2. When I played Rimsky Korsakovs "Flight Of The Bumble-bee", (in 16th notes at beat 144-160) it was recommended to play thumb position. But anyway, the music was soo fast I was using all my fingers to keep up with the fast speed so I had no choice but to use all my fingers when playing the music. I had to use my thumb because the notes were just too fast to play with four fingers smoothly.

3. When playing slower(8th notes or slower) music it is recommended to use thumb position so the music will flow easier without mistakes. If you don`t use your thumb, then shifting to different positions or strings might make the music rather scrachy than smooth. Using your thumb expands the reach of notes which enables you of not shifting harder and faster that neded.

- hope that helps and sorry for the misunderstanding. :-)

Yes usually, but whenever you have notes on the A string. When the music goes into treble clef (&) or Viola clef (|B), the music sheet usually shows where the thumb positions are. The stick figure person without any arms or legs. Rough discription huh? :-)
