I`m sorry, u can`t use vibrato on open string...it`s just not possible.
And arm vibrato is the most desirable vibrato...wrist is technically speaking...a replacement for the arm vibrato( esp. when yr reflex is too tense to do the arm one ).
Come`ron down to http://www.soloviolin.com

You can vibrato on open strings, but it`s sort of a fake vibrato.
For example, if you want to play an open G with vibrato, put your finger on the G one octave higher and vibrate it.

Okay, I get what u mean. Normally we do this in orchestral music, esp. in lower G and D strings to get a better ring.

I you use your finger for vibrato, then it isn`t open string. Open string means no fingers...

You basically plant your finger on the string, then shake your arm back and forth, making the finger move on the string, but not leave it`s overall spot... did that make any sense?

Technically, vibrato is moving between the notes directly around the note you want, so quickly that you don`t hear the changes. Your finger will NOT move, but you will `rock` it. I was never able to do wrist vibrato...where your wrist moves and your arm stays still. I suppose my little stubby fingers and arms didn`t allow me the room. But, there is no reason why you can`t do arm vibrato. Move the whole arm in a rocking motion. Although, in the high positions (I find 5th and higher), I have to do wrist vib....but I am able to so it up there.

It is about adding an extra texture to the note, without changing the note. A fullness. Vibrato should not sound too fast or slow. You know, too slow and you hear the other notes...and too fast, and it sounds like those singers who sound like they are having a seziure and shaking uncontrollably. It`s a gradual thing...and takes a lot of practice for some people. Some people get it right away. Really, it`s about having control of your hand, a relaxed position...not holding the violin too tight.

Oh, and another thing. The thumb...it is your anchor. It should always rest on the left edge of the finger board/neck...never sticking way up (well sometimes this happens briefly...but you can`t do vibrato that way), and never underneath or never not touching at all. It is your anchor. Focus on making sure it stays on the side of the neck. (Of course, it will move with shifting...but it won`t lose contact.) Good Luck!

Start my moving your whole hand very big up and down the neck...then gradually get smaller...until you are doing vibrato. like, really exaggerated waving of the hand on the violin...then slowly get smaller until you are only waving your hand in one position...remember to anchor your thumb and finger and still do the wave motion...you should get some type of vibrato from that. It takes practice...and lots of relaxed muscles! Good Luck!

Hi, I tried vibrato too, but it doesn`t work... The info here helped me a lot, but I still don`t get the hang of it. Can you possibly give me more information?
