Hi, the closest technique that comes close to what I use when I play my violin is the one Caroline uses. I have been playing for 8 years, and not long ago, maybe about a month ago, I asked my private teacher to teach me vibrato becuase I was getting very fustrated at the sounding of the notes, for me violin without vibrato was no fun. Took me 2 weeks to learn it and my teacher`s very impressed with it.
Firstly when you hold your violin, relax the grip on your left hand, dont grip it hoping for some twitchy feeble vibrato to come out. It would be best for your teacher to show you this because its hard to correct bad habits on the violin. But IF you must know....
Now, there are three vibrato`s: 1.Wrist Vibrato 2. Arm Vibrato 3. Finger Vibrato. The arm vibrato is the one I can help you with.
Every day, relax your wrist and wiggle it towards and away from you, this helps the wrist supple up.
Do this as much as possible, maybe 3 times a day for 15-20 minutes should help. Place your hand on the violin, still relaxed, and loosely put your fingers on the strings, (3rd finger on D string worked for me, because of its rich tone), then move your forearm and NOT your wrist! towards and away from urself, just play 3rd finger until you`ve mastered it. Remember that your left hand on the fingerboard should be at an angle for vibrato to work and if it helps, detatch your left hand thumb from the side of the fingerboard. Later, try different speeds, to master your vibrato, fast and slow. When you play music, dont use vibrato for every note as this can actually ruin the piece. Use it when it feels right, when you need to show emotion, and use as little of it as possible when playing music of the baroque era, as they couldnt do vibrato as well as now because of no chinrest. Vibrato only developed in the romantic and classical era so dont overdo it. Like I said, get some help off your teacher, thats the best person to teach you. BTW, if you feel you`ve got it but you suddenly forget or loose your vibrato while playing, dont carry on, put the violin down and relax the muscles in your left hand and practise what I told you above about hand wiggling lol.
And you will feel your wrist hurting for awhile when you stop playing, mine used to throb in the night and day. But that will go in time, you`re only using new muscles in your hand.
Hope this has been some help to you, and don`t completely trust this just incase you`re doing it wrong and then it`ll be solid to correct it.
All the best
Chris

The last message I wrote was directed at Loppi, because he or she was the one who first started off the thread and he asked about tips for playing the vibrato.

I`m 18 years old and I don`t have a teacher. I`m a baginner in playing violin. Although I play piano (only chords), I still find it very hard. Although I feel that I`m on the correct tune, I`m frustrated on how to play with it correctly. I can`t find any teacher here in our location, but if there someone knows, it`s very rare. Now I`m teaching myself but I think it`s a bad practice habit.I have a difficulty on holding the violin with my thumb correctly. Sometimes, it lays between my thumb and forefinger. Help me....

I am 12 and have been playing 4 1 year at school...
i learnd vibrato (its bad, but still vibrato)during the summer... USING UR TIPS (directed to those who actally gave tips, not those who said u cant do it)
the easyest method is using a pencil and shifting long strokes and then making it smaller (the strokes)then transferring to the violin

THANKS

I would disagree with previous comments on waiting for your teacher to teach you vibrato. Vibrato is something unique to each of us. Your teacher cannot teach you to acquire the "feeling/sensation" that you have while playing vibrato.

I have a suggestion for learning the vibrato:

1. Use the full-size mirror while playing because you need to first see your hand doing the vibrato, you see, it is a cognitive process....with practise, you will remember how it looks and feels...you will begin to play the vibrato without a mirror.....I did it this way.....it did not take long!

I partly disagree with the shifting to gain a vibrato because first of all, if you relax your hand a bit, it will help a vibrato, shifting sorta tenses things up.

I`ve been playing violin for about a year without a teacher and I`m trying to learn vibrato, trust me, you can teach yourself, just don`t get put off when it doesn`t work. Inspiration is success ^^.
