Has anyone got any ideas on how to quieten the sound of a violin, without having to play softly and slowly I mean. I live in a student house with wafer thin walls and four other people so you can imagine how it feels when practicing and so forth. Thanx

You can get a device called a practice mute which is similar to a normal mute except made of metal and quite heavy. It goes over the bridge and dampens the sound to a level where you can hear it but the sound doesn`t project. Have a look in any music shop and they should have devices like this.

U can get a practice mute.
There are 2 other kinds. Soloist mute and orchestral mute.
Or alternatively( but pls don`t try this), u can clip yr bridge and play with a new, unrosined bow(this u can try ) infront of a tapestry.

My practice mutes are wooden clothes pins. I clip them on the bridge.
